obama bin biden asked:
Hi, I am looking to order my girlfriend some flowers online and have noticed on some items/sites an additional wire fee, like $5-10, and was wondering what it is? This is in addition to the delivery fee and taxes. Thanks!

The wire fee is if you want to send flowers to someone out of town. The florist in your city contacts a florist in the other city to deliver the flowers, and you pay for the extra service. Or in your case, the online florist contacts a florist in your town. Wire is an old term dating back to the telegraph. Everything now of course is electronic.
Hi, more specifically, the wire fee is charged by a “middle man”. Many “online florists” are order gatherers, not florists. If they are an order gatherer or if the delivery location is outside of their reach, they will retain a portion of the order value and have another florist closer to the delivery location fill the order. This commission is usually not made public. The wire fee is an additional fee charged by the middle man who relays the order to the delivery florist. If they are divulging the wire fee and not the commission, they are really trying to make it look like thats the only fee you are paying (concealing the commission). Thats why it is often better to deal with actual florists in the area being delivered to, or a small private network of florists. All the clearing houses like ftd, teleflora, interflora are the relay services (middle men) taking the wire fee.
